In this tutorial we learn how to install python3-gdal on Ubuntu.
What is python3-gdal
python3-gdal is:
GDAL is a translator library for raster geospatial data formats. As a library, it presents a single abstract data model to the calling application for all supported formats. The related OGR library (which lives within the GDAL source tree) provides a similar capability for simple features vector data.
GDAL supports 40+ popular data formats, including commonly used ones (GeoTIFF, JPEG, PNG and more) as well as the ones used in GIS and remote sensing software packages (ERDAS Imagine, ESRI Arc/Info, ENVI, PCI Geomatics). Also supported many remote sensing and scientific data distribution formats such as HDF, EOS FAST, NOAA L1B, NetCDF, FITS.
OGR library supports popular vector formats like ESRI Shapefile, TIGER data, S57, MapInfo File, DGN, GML and more.
This package contains Python 3 bindings for the GDAL/OGR library.
There are three methods to install python3-gdal on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install python3-gdal Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install python3-gdal using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install python3-gdal
Install python3-gdal Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install python3-gdal using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install python3-gdal
Install python3-gdal Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install python3-gdal using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install python3-gdal
How To Uninstall python3-gdal on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the python3-gdal package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove python3-gdal
Uninstall python3-gdal And Its Dependencies
To uninstall python3-gdal and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove python3-gdal
Remove python3-gdal Configurations and Data
To remove python3-gdal configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge python3-gdal
Remove python3-gdal configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove python3-gdal configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge python3-gdal
