Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install pullimap on Ubuntu.
What is pullimap
pullimap is:
PullIMAP retrieves messages from an IMAP mailbox and deliver them to an SMTP or LMTP transmission channel. It can also remove old messages after a configurable retention period.
A statefile is used to keep track of the mailbox’s UIDVALIDITY and UIDNEXT values. While PullIMAP is running, the statefile is also used to keep track of UIDs being delivered, which avoids duplicate deliveries if the process is interrupted.
PullIMAP supports the COMPRESS=DEFLATE extension from [RFC4978]. It is enabled by default on servers advertising it, in order to reduce network traffic, especially for long-lived connections (when IDLE commands are enabled.)
There are three methods to install pullimap on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install pullimap Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install pullimap using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install pullimap
Install pullimap Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install pullimap using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install pullimap
Install pullimap Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install pullimap using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install pullimap
How To Uninstall pullimap on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the pullimap package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove pullimap
Uninstall pullimap And Its Dependencies
To uninstall pullimap and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove pullimap
Remove pullimap Configurations and Data
To remove pullimap configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge pullimap
Remove pullimap configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove pullimap configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge pullimap
