Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install pssh on Ubuntu.
What is pssh
pssh is:
pssh provides a number of commands for executing against a group of computers, using SSH. It’s most useful for operating on clusters of homogenously-configured hosts.
The package contains:
- Parallel ssh (parallel-ssh, upstream calls it pssh), executes commands on multiple hosts in parallel
- Parallel scp (parallel-scp, upstream calls it pscp), copies files to multiple remote hosts in parallel
- Parallel rsync (parallel-rsync, upstream calls it prsync), efficiently copies files to multiple hosts in parallel
- Parallel nuke (parallel-nuke, upstream calls it pnuke), kills processes on multiple remote hosts in parallel
- Parallel slurp (parallel-slurp, upstream calls it pslurp), copies files from multiple remote hosts to a central host in parallel
These tools are good for controlling large collections of nodes, where faster alternatives such as gexec and pcp are not available.
This package contains the tools itself.
There are three methods to install pssh on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install pssh Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install pssh using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install pssh
Install pssh Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install pssh using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install pssh
Install pssh Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install pssh using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install pssh
How To Uninstall pssh on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the pssh package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove pssh
Uninstall pssh And Its Dependencies
To uninstall pssh and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove pssh
Remove pssh Configurations and Data
To remove pssh configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge pssh
Remove pssh configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove pssh configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge pssh
