Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install primer3 on Ubuntu.

What is primer3

primer3 is:

Primer3 picks primers for Polymerase Chain Reactions (PCRs), considering as criteria oligonucleotide melting temperature, size, GC content and primer-dimer possibilities, PCR product size, positional constraints within the source sequence, and miscellaneous other constraints. All of these criteria are user-specifiable as constraints, and some are specifiable as terms in an objective function that characterizes an optimal primer pair.

There are three methods to install primer3 on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install primer3 Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install primer3 using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install primer3

Install primer3 Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install primer3 using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install primer3

Install primer3 Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install primer3 using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install primer3

How To Uninstall primer3 on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the primer3 package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove primer3

Uninstall primer3 And Its Dependencies

To uninstall primer3 and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove primer3

Remove primer3 Configurations and Data

To remove primer3 configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge primer3

Remove primer3 configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove primer3 configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge primer3
