Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install policykit-1 on Ubuntu.

What is policykit-1

policykit-1 is:

polkit is an application-level toolkit for defining and handling the policy that allows unprivileged processes to speak to privileged processes. It was previously named PolicyKit.

This transitional package depends on polkitd, the system service used by polkit, and pkexec, a setuid program analogous to sudo. They were historically packaged together, but have been separated so that users of polkitd are not required to install pkexec.

There are three methods to install policykit-1 on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install policykit-1 Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install policykit-1 using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install policykit-1

Install policykit-1 Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install policykit-1 using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install policykit-1

Install policykit-1 Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install policykit-1 using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install policykit-1

How To Uninstall policykit-1 on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the policykit-1 package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove policykit-1

Uninstall policykit-1 And Its Dependencies

To uninstall policykit-1 and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove policykit-1

Remove policykit-1 Configurations and Data

To remove policykit-1 configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge policykit-1

Remove policykit-1 configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove policykit-1 configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge policykit-1
