Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install pmount on Ubuntu.
What is pmount
pmount is:
pmount is a wrapper around the standard mount program which permits normal users to mount removable devices without a matching /etc/fstab entry. This provides a robust basis for automounting frameworks like GNOME’s Utopia project and confines the amount of code that runs as root to a minimum.
If a LUKS capable cryptsetup package is installed, pmount is able to transparently mount encrypted volumes.
There are three methods to install pmount on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install pmount Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install pmount using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install pmount
Install pmount Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install pmount using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install pmount
Install pmount Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install pmount using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install pmount
How To Uninstall pmount on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the pmount package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove pmount
Uninstall pmount And Its Dependencies
To uninstall pmount and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove pmount
Remove pmount Configurations and Data
To remove pmount configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge pmount
Remove pmount configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove pmount configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge pmount
