How To Install pmacct on Ubuntu

Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install pmacct on Ubuntu.
What is pmacct
pmacct is:
pmacct is a tool designed to gather traffic information (bytes and number of packets) by listening on a promiscuous interface or for Netflow data, which may facilitate billing, bandwidth management, traffic analysis, or creating usage graphs.
Data can be stored in memory and queried, displayed directly, or written to a database; storage methods are quite flexible and may aggregate totals or keep them separate.
There are three methods to install pmacct on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install pmacct Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install pmacct using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install pmacct
Install pmacct Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install pmacct using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install pmacct
Install pmacct Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install pmacct using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install pmacct
How To Uninstall pmacct on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the pmacct package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove pmacct
Uninstall pmacct And Its Dependencies
To uninstall pmacct and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove pmacct
Remove pmacct Configurations and Data
To remove pmacct configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge pmacct
Remove pmacct configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove pmacct configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge pmacct
