How To Install plantuml on Ubuntu

Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install plantuml on Ubuntu.
What is plantuml
plantuml is:
PlantUML is a program allowing to draw UML diagrams, using a simple human readable text description.
PlantUML supports the following UML diagrams:
- sequence diagram
- use case diagram
- class diagram
- activity diagram
- component diagram
- state diagram
- object diagram
- deployment diagram
- timing diagram
The following non-UML diagrams are also supported:
- wireframe graphical interface (Salt)
- Archimate diagram
- Specification and Description Language (SDL)
- Ditaa diagram
- Gantt diagram
- mathematics with AsciiMath or JLaTeXMath notation
Output images can be generated in PNG, in SVG or LaTeX format. PlantUML also supports generation of ASCII art diagrams (only for sequence diagrams).
There are three methods to install plantuml on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install plantuml Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install plantuml using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install plantuml
Install plantuml Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install plantuml using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install plantuml
Install plantuml Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install plantuml using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install plantuml
How To Uninstall plantuml on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the plantuml package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove plantuml
Uninstall plantuml And Its Dependencies
To uninstall plantuml and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove plantuml
Remove plantuml Configurations and Data
To remove plantuml configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge plantuml
Remove plantuml configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove plantuml configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge plantuml
