In this tutorial we learn how to install picocom on Ubuntu.
What is picocom
picocom is:
picocom was designed to serve as a simple, manual, modem configuration, testing, and debugging tool. It has also served (quite well) as a low-tech “terminal-window” to allow operator intervention in PPP connection scripts (something like the ms-windows “open terminal window before / after dialing” feature). It could also prove useful in many other similar tasks. It is ideal for embedded systems since its memory footprint is minimal.
There are three methods to install picocom on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install picocom Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install picocom using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install picocom
Install picocom Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install picocom using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install picocom
Install picocom Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install picocom using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install picocom
How To Uninstall picocom on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the picocom package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove picocom
Uninstall picocom And Its Dependencies
To uninstall picocom and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove picocom
Remove picocom Configurations and Data
To remove picocom configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge picocom
Remove picocom configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove picocom configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge picocom
