In this tutorial we learn how to install pdns-server on Ubuntu.
What is pdns-server
pdns-server is:
PowerDNS is a versatile nameserver which supports a large number of different backends ranging from simple zonefiles to relational databases and load balancing/failover algorithms. PowerDNS tries to emphasize speed and security.
This is the authoritative nameserver that answers questions about domains that it knows about. You also need at least one backend installed to serve data.
There are three methods to install pdns-server on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install pdns-server Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install pdns-server using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install pdns-server
Install pdns-server Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install pdns-server using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install pdns-server
Install pdns-server Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install pdns-server using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install pdns-server
How To Uninstall pdns-server on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the pdns-server package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove pdns-server
Uninstall pdns-server And Its Dependencies
To uninstall pdns-server and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove pdns-server
Remove pdns-server Configurations and Data
To remove pdns-server configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge pdns-server
Remove pdns-server configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove pdns-server configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge pdns-server
