In this tutorial we learn how to install ospd-openvas on Ubuntu.
What is ospd-openvas
ospd-openvas is:
This package contains an OSP server implementation to allow GVM to remotely control OpenVAS.
It is a command line tool with parameters to start a daemon which keeps waiting for instructions to update the feed of vulnerability tests and to start a scan. The second part of the interface is the redis store where the parameters about a scan task need to be placed and from where the results can be retrieved, being the unique communication channel between OSPD-OpenVAS and OpenVAS.
Once running, you need to configure OpenVAS for the Greenbone Vulnerability Manager, for example via the web interface Greenbone Security Assistant. Then you can create scan tasks to use OpenVAS.
There are three methods to install ospd-openvas on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install ospd-openvas Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install ospd-openvas using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install ospd-openvas
Install ospd-openvas Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install ospd-openvas using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install ospd-openvas
Install ospd-openvas Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install ospd-openvas using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install ospd-openvas
How To Uninstall ospd-openvas on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the ospd-openvas package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove ospd-openvas
Uninstall ospd-openvas And Its Dependencies
To uninstall ospd-openvas and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove ospd-openvas
Remove ospd-openvas Configurations and Data
To remove ospd-openvas configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge ospd-openvas
Remove ospd-openvas configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove ospd-openvas configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge ospd-openvas
