In this tutorial we learn how to install optipng on Ubuntu.
What is optipng
optipng is:
OptiPNG is a PNG optimizer that recompresses the image files to a smaller size. It losslessly reduces the bit depth, the color type and the color palette of the image, runs a suite of compression methods and strategies, and selects the compression parameters that yield the smallest output file. It also recognizes several external file formats like BMP, GIF, TIFF and PNM (PBM, PGM, PPM).
There are three methods to install optipng on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install optipng Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install optipng using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install optipng
Install optipng Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install optipng using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install optipng
Install optipng Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install optipng using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install optipng
How To Uninstall optipng on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the optipng package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove optipng
Uninstall optipng And Its Dependencies
To uninstall optipng and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove optipng
Remove optipng Configurations and Data
To remove optipng configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge optipng
Remove optipng configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
