In this tutorial we learn how to install openstack-pkg-tools on Ubuntu.
What is openstack-pkg-tools
openstack-pkg-tools is:
This package contains some useful shell scripts and helpers for building the OpenStack packages in Debian, including:
- shared code for maintainer scripts (.config, .postinst, …).
- init script templates to automatically generate init scripts for sysv-rc and systemd.
- tools to build backports using sbuild and/or Jenkins based on gbp workflow.
- utility to maintain git packaging (to be included in a debian/rules).
Even if this package is maintained in order to build OpenStack packages, it is of a general purpose, and it can be used for building any package.
There are three methods to install openstack-pkg-tools on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install openstack-pkg-tools Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install openstack-pkg-tools using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install openstack-pkg-tools
Install openstack-pkg-tools Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install openstack-pkg-tools using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install openstack-pkg-tools

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install openstack-pkg-tools using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install openstack-pkg-tools
How To Uninstall openstack-pkg-tools on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the openstack-pkg-tools package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove openstack-pkg-tools

To uninstall openstack-pkg-tools and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove openstack-pkg-tools
Remove openstack-pkg-tools Configurations and Data
To remove openstack-pkg-tools configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge openstack-pkg-tools
Remove openstack-pkg-tools configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove openstack-pkg-tools configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge openstack-pkg-tools
