Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install opencpn on Ubuntu.

What is opencpn

opencpn is:

Chart Plotter and Navigational software program for use underway or as a planning tool. Developed by a team of active sailors using real world conditions for program testing and refinement. By default supports raster and vector formats like BSB and S63. Support for many other formats are available in plugins. Other plugins provides support for e. g., AIS, radar and weather maps. Application has language support in 20+ languages.

This package contains programs, libraries and some support files.

There are three methods to install opencpn on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install opencpn Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install opencpn using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install opencpn

Install opencpn Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install opencpn using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install opencpn

Install opencpn Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install opencpn using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install opencpn

How To Uninstall opencpn on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the opencpn package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove opencpn

Uninstall opencpn And Its Dependencies

To uninstall opencpn and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove opencpn

Remove opencpn Configurations and Data

To remove opencpn configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge opencpn

Remove opencpn configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove opencpn configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge opencpn
