In this tutorial we learn how to install openbgpd on Ubuntu.

What is openbgpd

openbgpd is:

The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) allows machines to exchange information about network reachability with other systems speaking the BGP protocol. The global Internet routing system is composed of BGP speakers. OpenBGPD, also known as OpenBSD Border Gateway Protocol Daemon, is a server software program that allows general purpose computers to be used as routers, Route Reflectors, or Route Servers. It is a Unix system daemon that provides a free, open-source implementation of the BGP as specified by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).

There are three methods to install openbgpd on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install openbgpd Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install openbgpd using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install openbgpd

Install openbgpd Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install openbgpd using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install openbgpd

Install openbgpd Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install openbgpd using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install openbgpd

How To Uninstall openbgpd on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the openbgpd package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove openbgpd

Uninstall openbgpd And Its Dependencies

To uninstall openbgpd and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove openbgpd

Remove openbgpd Configurations and Data

To remove openbgpd configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge openbgpd

Remove openbgpd configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove openbgpd configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge openbgpd
