In this tutorial we learn how to install olpc-kbdshim on Ubuntu.

What is olpc-kbdshim

olpc-kbdshim is:

The olpc-kbdshim daemon is used to handle keyboard events on the somewhat unique OLPC XO hardware. It does this by monitoring the keyboard and touchpad, enabling the XO “grab” keys and touchpad rotation (to match screen rotation), and reporting user (in)activity. It can also bind the XO screen rotate, brightness, and volume keys to appropriate commands (which are provided).

There are three methods to install olpc-kbdshim on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install olpc-kbdshim Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install olpc-kbdshim using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install olpc-kbdshim

Install olpc-kbdshim Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install olpc-kbdshim using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install olpc-kbdshim

Install olpc-kbdshim Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install olpc-kbdshim using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install olpc-kbdshim

How To Uninstall olpc-kbdshim on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the olpc-kbdshim package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove olpc-kbdshim

Uninstall olpc-kbdshim And Its Dependencies

To uninstall olpc-kbdshim and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove olpc-kbdshim

Remove olpc-kbdshim Configurations and Data

To remove olpc-kbdshim configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge olpc-kbdshim

Remove olpc-kbdshim configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove olpc-kbdshim configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge olpc-kbdshim
