In this tutorial we learn how to install okular on Ubuntu.

What is okular

Okular is a universal document viewer with support for advanced document features, such as annotations, forms, and embedded files.

This package provides the document viewer application, plus plugins for a wide variety of document formats such as:

The Calligra suite provides Okular plugins for OpenDocument formats that can be found in the okular-backend-odt and okular-backend-odp packages.

This package is part of the KDE graphics module.

There are three methods to install okular on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install okular Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install okular using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install okular

Install okular Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install okular using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install okular

Install okular Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install okular using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install okular

How To Uninstall okular on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the okular package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove okular

Uninstall okular And Its Dependencies

To uninstall okular and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove okular

Remove okular Configurations and Data

To remove okular configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge okular

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge okular
