In this tutorial we learn how to install ninja-build on Ubuntu.
What is ninja-build
ninja-build is:
Ninja is yet another build system. It takes as input the interdependencies of files (typically source code and output executables) and orchestrates building them, quickly.
Ninja joins a sea of other build systems. Its distinguishing goal is to be fast. It is born from the Chromium browser project, which has over 30,000 source files and whose other build systems can take ten seconds to start building after changing one file. Ninja is under a second.
There are three methods to install ninja-build on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install ninja-build Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install ninja-build using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install ninja-build

Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install ninja-build using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install ninja-build
Install ninja-build Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install ninja-build using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install ninja-build
How To Uninstall ninja-build on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the ninja-build package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove ninja-build
Uninstall ninja-build And Its Dependencies
To uninstall ninja-build and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove ninja-build
Remove ninja-build Configurations and Data
To remove ninja-build configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge ninja-build
