In this tutorial we learn how to install netatalk on Ubuntu.
What is netatalk
netatalk is:
Netatalk is an implementation of the Apple Filing Protocol (AFP), for offering file service (mainly) to macOS clients.
Compared to the Windows-native SMB protocol (which is also supported on macOS), the Macintosh-native AFP protocol is accessible from a different network, can be simpler to setup and faster for some operations (e.g. server-to-server copying), and some features (e.g. the backup service Time Machine) may work more reliably than over SMB.
This package contains all daemon and utility programs as well as Netatalk’s libraries.
There are three methods to install netatalk on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install netatalk Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install netatalk using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install netatalk
Install netatalk Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install netatalk using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install netatalk
Install netatalk Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install netatalk using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install netatalk
How To Uninstall netatalk on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the netatalk package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove netatalk
Uninstall netatalk And Its Dependencies
To uninstall netatalk and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove netatalk
Remove netatalk Configurations and Data
To remove netatalk configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge netatalk
Remove netatalk configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove netatalk configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge netatalk
