Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install minimap on Ubuntu.

What is minimap

minimap is:

Minimap is an experimental tool to efficiently find multiple approximate mapping positions between two sets of long biological sequences, such as between DNA reads and reference genomes, between genomes and between long noisy reads. Minimap does not generate alignments as of now and because of this, it is usually tens of times faster than mainstream aligners. It does not replace mainstream aligners, but it can be useful when you want to quickly identify long approximate matches at moderate divergence among a huge collection of sequences. For this task, it is much faster than most existing tools.

There are three methods to install minimap on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install minimap Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install minimap using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install minimap

Install minimap Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install minimap using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install minimap

Install minimap Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install minimap using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install minimap

How To Uninstall minimap on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the minimap package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove minimap

Uninstall minimap And Its Dependencies

To uninstall minimap and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove minimap

Remove minimap Configurations and Data

To remove minimap configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge minimap

Remove minimap configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove minimap configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge minimap
