How To Install mercantile on Ubuntu

Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install mercantile on Ubuntu.

What is mercantile

mercantile is:

The mercantile module provides functions that respectively return the upper left corner and bounding longitudes and latitudes for XYZ tiles, spherical mercator x and y coordinates, tile containing a given point, and quadkey conversion functions for translating between quadkey and tile coordinates.

Also in mercantile are functions to traverse the tile stack. Named tuples are used to represent tiles, coordinates, and bounding boxes.

This package contains the mercantile utility.

There are three methods to install mercantile on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install mercantile Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install mercantile using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install mercantile

Install mercantile Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install mercantile using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install mercantile

Install mercantile Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install mercantile using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install mercantile

How To Uninstall mercantile on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the mercantile package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove mercantile

Uninstall mercantile And Its Dependencies

To uninstall mercantile and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove mercantile

Remove mercantile Configurations and Data

To remove mercantile configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge mercantile

Remove mercantile configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove mercantile configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge mercantile
