Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install mencoder on Ubuntu.
What is mencoder
mencoder is:
MPlayer plays most MPEG, VOB, AVI, Ogg/OGM, VIVO, ASF/WMA/WMV, QT/MOV/MP4, FLI, RM, NuppelVideo, yuv4mpeg, FILM, RoQ, PVA files, supported by many native, XAnim, RealPlayer, and Win32 DLL codecs. It can also play VideoCD, SVCD, DVD, 3ivx, RealMedia, and DivX movies.
This package contains mencoder, a simple movie encoder, designed to encode MPlayer-playable movies (AVI/ASF/OGG/DVD/VCD/VOB/MPG/MOV/VIV/FLI/RM/NUV/NET) to other MPlayer-playable formats. It can encode with various codecs, like DivX4 (1 or 2 passes), libavcodec, PCM/MP3/VBRMP3 audio. Also has stream copying and video resizing capabilities.
There are three methods to install mencoder on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install mencoder Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install mencoder using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install mencoder

Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install mencoder using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install mencoder
Install mencoder Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install mencoder using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install mencoder
How To Uninstall mencoder on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the mencoder package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove mencoder
Uninstall mencoder And Its Dependencies
To uninstall mencoder and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove mencoder
Remove mencoder Configurations and Data
To remove mencoder configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge mencoder
Remove mencoder configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove mencoder configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge mencoder
