In this tutorial we learn how to install maxima
on Ubuntu.
What is maxima
maxima is:
Maxima is a fully symbolic computation program. It is full featured doing symbolic manipulation of polynomials, matrices, rational functions, integration, Todd-coxeter methods for finite group analysis, graphing, multiple precision floating point computation. It has a symbolic source level debugger for maxima code. Maxima is based on the original Macsyma developed at MIT in the 1970s. It is quite reliable, and has good garbage collection, and no memory leaks. It comes with hundreds of self tests.
This package contains the main executables and base system files.
There are three methods to install maxima
on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install maxima Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install maxima
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install maxima

After updating apt database, We can install maxima

How To Uninstall maxima on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the maxima
package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove maxima
Remove maxima Configurations and Data
To remove maxima
configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge maxima
