Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install maxima-src on Ubuntu.
What is maxima-src
maxima-src is:
Maxima is a fully symbolic computation program. It is full featured doing symbolic manipulation of polynomials, matrices, rational functions, integration, Todd-coxeter methods for finite group analysis, graphing, multiple precision floating point computation. It has a symbolic source level debugger for maxima code. Maxima is based on the original Macsyma developed at MIT in the 1970s. It is quite reliable, and has good garbage collection, and no memory leaks. It comes with hundreds of self tests.
This package contains the lisp source code.
There are three methods to install maxima-src on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install maxima-src Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install maxima-src using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install maxima-src
Install maxima-src Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install maxima-src using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install maxima-src
Install maxima-src Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install maxima-src using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install maxima-src
How To Uninstall maxima-src on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the maxima-src package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove maxima-src
Uninstall maxima-src And Its Dependencies
To uninstall maxima-src and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove maxima-src
Remove maxima-src Configurations and Data
To remove maxima-src configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge maxima-src
