Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install mate-utils on Ubuntu.

What is `mate-utils`

mate-utils is:

This package contains all the tools bundled as MATE utilities:

mate-disk-usage-analyzer, a disk usage analyser
mate-dictionary, a program which can look up the definition of words over the internet (including a panel applet to do the same)
mate-search-tool, with which one can find files by name or content
mate-system-log, a log viewing application
mate-screenshot, a tool to take desktop screenshots and save them into a file

There are three methods to install mate-utils on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install mate-utils Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install mate-utils using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install mate-utils

Update apt database with apt using the following command.
