Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install lshw on Ubuntu.
What is lshw
lshw is:
A small tool to provide detailed information on the hardware configuration of the machine. It can report exact memory configuration, firmware version, mainboard configuration, CPU version and speed, cache configuration, bus speed, etc. on DMI-capable x86 systems, on some PowerPC machines (PowerMac G4 is known to work) and AMD64.
Information can be output in plain text, HTML or XML.
There are three methods to install lshw on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install lshw Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install lshw using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install lshw
Install lshw Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install lshw using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install lshw
Install lshw Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install lshw using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install lshw
How To Uninstall lshw on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the lshw package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove lshw
Uninstall lshw And Its Dependencies
To uninstall lshw and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove lshw
Remove lshw Configurations and Data
To remove lshw configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge lshw
