Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install libxv-dev on Ubuntu.
What is libxv-dev
libxv-dev is:
libXv provides an X Window System client interface to the XVideo extension to the X protocol.
The XVideo extension allows for accelerated drawing of videos. Hardware adaptors are exposed to clients, which may draw in a number of colourspaces, including YUV.
This package contains the development headers for the library found in libxv1. Non-developers likely have little use for this package.

There are three methods to install libxv-dev on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install libxv-dev Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install libxv-dev using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install libxv-dev

Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install libxv-dev using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install libxv-dev
Install libxv-dev Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install libxv-dev using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install libxv-dev
How To Uninstall libxv-dev on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the libxv-dev package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove libxv-dev

To uninstall libxv-dev and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove libxv-dev
