In this tutorial we learn how to install libxext-dev on Ubuntu.

What is libxext-dev

libxext-dev is:

libXext provides an X Window System client interface to several extensions to the X protocol.

The supported protocol extensions are:

libXext also provides a small set of utility functions to aid authors of client APIs for X protocol extensions.

This package contains the development headers for the library found in libxext6. Non-developers likely have little use for this package.

There are three methods to install libxext-dev on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install libxext-dev Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install libxext-dev using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install libxext-dev

Install libxext-dev Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install libxext-dev using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install libxext-dev

Install libxext-dev Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install libxext-dev using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install libxext-dev

How To Uninstall libxext-dev on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the libxext-dev package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove libxext-dev

Uninstall libxext-dev And Its Dependencies

To uninstall libxext-dev and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove libxext-dev

Remove libxext-dev Configurations and Data

To remove libxext-dev configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge libxext-dev

Remove libxext-dev configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove libxext-dev configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge libxext-dev
