In this tutorial we learn how to install libvw-dev on Ubuntu.
What is libvw-dev
libvw-dev is:
Vowpal Wabbit is a fast online machine learning algorithm. The core algorithm is specialist gradient descent (GD) on a loss function (several are available). VW features:
- flexible input data specification
- speedy learning
- scalability (bounded memory footprint, suitable for distributed computation)
- feature pairing
This package contains development files needed to compile and link programs which use vowpal-wabbit’s libraries.
There are three methods to install libvw-dev on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install libvw-dev Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install libvw-dev using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install libvw-dev

Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install libvw-dev using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install libvw-dev
Install libvw-dev Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install libvw-dev using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install libvw-dev
How To Uninstall libvw-dev on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the libvw-dev package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove libvw-dev
Uninstall libvw-dev And Its Dependencies
To uninstall libvw-dev and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove libvw-dev
Remove libvw-dev Configurations and Data
To remove libvw-dev configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge libvw-dev
