In this tutorial we learn how to install libvlc-bin on Ubuntu.
What is libvlc-bin
libvlc-bin is:
VLC is the VideoLAN project’s media player. It plays MPEG, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, MOV, WMV, QuickTime, WebM, FLAC, MP3, Ogg/Vorbis files, DVDs, VCDs, podcasts, and multimedia streams from various network sources.
This package contains the vlc-cache-gen binary.
There are three methods to install libvlc-bin on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install libvlc-bin Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install libvlc-bin using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install libvlc-bin
Install libvlc-bin Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install libvlc-bin using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install libvlc-bin
Install libvlc-bin Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install libvlc-bin using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install libvlc-bin
How To Uninstall libvlc-bin on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the libvlc-bin package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove libvlc-bin
Uninstall libvlc-bin And Its Dependencies
To uninstall libvlc-bin and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove libvlc-bin
Remove libvlc-bin Configurations and Data
To remove libvlc-bin configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge libvlc-bin
