Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install libsquashfs-dev on Ubuntu.

What is `libsquashfs-dev`

libsquashfs-dev is:

SquashFS is a highly compressed read-only filesystem for Linux, optimized for small size and high packing density. It is widely used in embedded systems and bootable live media.

SquashFS supports many different compression formats, such as zstd, xz, zlib or lzo for both data and metadata compression. It has many features expected from popular filesystems, such as extended attributes and support for NFS export.

As the name suggests, this is not the original user space tooling for SquashFS. Here are some of the features that primarily distinguish this package from the original:

reproducible SquashFS images, i.e. deterministic packing without any local time stamps,
Linux gen_init_cpio like file listing for micro managing the file system contents, permissions, and ownership without having to replicate the file system (and especially permissions) locally,
support for SELinux contexts file (see selabel_file(5)) to generate SELinux labels.

This package contains the C development headers and library files needed to compile programs using the squashfs-tools-ng library.

There are three methods to install libsquashfs-dev on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install libsquashfs-dev Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install libsquashfs-dev using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install libsquashfs-dev

Install libsquashfs-dev Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install libsquashfs-dev using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install libsquashfs-dev

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install libsquashfs-dev using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install libsquashfs-dev

How To Uninstall libsquashfs-dev on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the libsquashfs-dev package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove libsquashfs-dev

Uninstall libsquashfs-dev And Its Dependencies

To uninstall libsquashfs-dev and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove libsquashfs-dev

Remove libsquashfs-dev Configurations and Data

To remove libsquashfs-dev configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge libsquashfs-dev

Remove libsquashfs-dev configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove libsquashfs-dev configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge libsquashfs-dev
