What is libsndfile1
libsndfile1 is:
libsndfile is a library of C routines for reading and writing files containing sampled audio data.
Various versions of WAV (integer, floating point, GSM, and compressed formats); Microsoft PCM, A-law and u-law formats; AIFF, AIFC and RIFX; various AU/SND formats (Sun/NeXT, Dec AU, G721 and G723 ADPCM); RAW header-less PCM files; Amiga IFF/8SVX/16SV PCM files; Ensoniq PARIS (.PAF); Apple’s Core Audio Format (CAF) and others.
There are three methods to install libsndfile1
on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install libsndfile1 Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install libsndfile1
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install libsndfile1

After updating apt database, We can install libsndfile1

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install libsndfile1
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install libsndfile1
How To Uninstall libsndfile1 on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the libsndfile1
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove libsndfile1
Uninstall libsndfile1 And Its Dependencies
To uninstall libsndfile1
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove libsndfile1
Remove libsndfile1 Configurations and Data
To remove libsndfile1
configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge libsndfile1
Remove libsndfile1 configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove libsndfile1

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge libsndfile1
