How To Install libpam-encfs on Ubuntu

In this tutorial we learn how to install libpam-encfs on Ubuntu.

What is libpam-encfs

libpam-encfs is:

This PAM module integrates encfs and PAM, so home directories are automatically mounted on login. EncFS provides an encrypted filesystem in user-space, this PAM module easily allow each user to have an encrypted home, and mount it automatically using its login password as encfs password.

There are three methods to install libpam-encfs on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install libpam-encfs Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install libpam-encfs using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install libpam-encfs

Install libpam-encfs Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install libpam-encfs using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install libpam-encfs

Install libpam-encfs Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install libpam-encfs using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install libpam-encfs

How To Uninstall libpam-encfs on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the libpam-encfs package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove libpam-encfs

Uninstall libpam-encfs And Its Dependencies

To uninstall libpam-encfs and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove libpam-encfs

Remove libpam-encfs Configurations and Data

To remove libpam-encfs configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge libpam-encfs

Remove libpam-encfs configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove libpam-encfs configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge libpam-encfs
