How To Install libnss-pgsql2 on Ubuntu

Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install libnss-pgsql2 on Ubuntu.

What is libnss-pgsql2

libnss-pgsql2 is:

This module works as a replacement for the flat file databases /etc/passwd, /etc/group etc. It is a plugin to glibc’s name service switch.

The module uses tables in a PostgreSQL database to store user, group, and shadow information. The module can be configured to use custom queries to retrieve it’s information from a database. The module allows one to separate the configuration for shadow information from group and user information to restrict access to shadow information to privileged users (i.e. root or the shadow group).

There are three methods to install libnss-pgsql2 on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install libnss-pgsql2 Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install libnss-pgsql2 using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install libnss-pgsql2

Install libnss-pgsql2 Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install libnss-pgsql2 using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install libnss-pgsql2

Install libnss-pgsql2 Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install libnss-pgsql2 using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install libnss-pgsql2

How To Uninstall libnss-pgsql2 on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the libnss-pgsql2 package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove libnss-pgsql2

Uninstall libnss-pgsql2 And Its Dependencies

To uninstall libnss-pgsql2 and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove libnss-pgsql2

Remove libnss-pgsql2 Configurations and Data

To remove libnss-pgsql2 configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge libnss-pgsql2

Remove libnss-pgsql2 configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove libnss-pgsql2 configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge libnss-pgsql2
