In this tutorial we learn how to install libmbedtls-dev on Ubuntu.
What is libmbedtls-dev
libmbedtls-dev is:
mbed TLS (formerly known as PolarSSL) is a lean open source crypto library for providing SSL and TLS support in your programs. It offers an intuitive API and documented header files, so you can actually understand what the code does. It features:
- Symmetric algorithms, like AES, Blowfish, Triple-DES, DES, ARC4, Camellia and XTEA
- Hash algorithms, like SHA-1, SHA-2, RIPEMD-160 and MD5
- Entropy pool and random generators, like CTR-DRBG and HMAC-DRBG
- Public key algorithms, like RSA, Elliptic Curves, Diffie-Hellman, ECDSA and ECDH
- TLS 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2
- Abstraction layers for ciphers, hashes, public key operations, platform abstraction and threading
This package contains the header files and static libraries for mbed TLS.
There are three methods to install libmbedtls-dev on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install libmbedtls-dev Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install libmbedtls-dev using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install libmbedtls-dev
Install libmbedtls-dev Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install libmbedtls-dev using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install libmbedtls-dev
Install libmbedtls-dev Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install libmbedtls-dev using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install libmbedtls-dev
How To Uninstall libmbedtls-dev on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the libmbedtls-dev package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove libmbedtls-dev
Uninstall libmbedtls-dev And Its Dependencies
To uninstall libmbedtls-dev and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove libmbedtls-dev
Remove libmbedtls-dev Configurations and Data
To remove libmbedtls-dev configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge libmbedtls-dev
Remove libmbedtls-dev configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove libmbedtls-dev configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge libmbedtls-dev
