In this tutorial we learn how to install libmad-ocaml on Ubuntu.
What is libmad-ocaml
libmad-ocaml is:
This OCaml library interfaces the MAD C library to decode MPEG files. The MAD library currently only supports the MPEG 1 standard, but fully implements all three audio layers (Layer I, Layer II, and Layer III, the latter often colloquially known as MP3.)
MAD has the following special features:
- 100% fixed-point (integer) computation
- completely new implementation based on the ISO/IEC 11172-3 standard
- distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL)
This package contains only the shared runtime stub libraries.
There are three methods to install libmad-ocaml on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install libmad-ocaml Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install libmad-ocaml using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install libmad-ocaml

Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install libmad-ocaml using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install libmad-ocaml
Install libmad-ocaml Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install libmad-ocaml using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install libmad-ocaml
How To Uninstall libmad-ocaml on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the libmad-ocaml package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove libmad-ocaml
Uninstall libmad-ocaml And Its Dependencies
To uninstall libmad-ocaml and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove libmad-ocaml
Remove libmad-ocaml Configurations and Data
To remove libmad-ocaml configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge libmad-ocaml
Remove libmad-ocaml configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove libmad-ocaml configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge libmad-ocaml
