In this tutorial we learn how to install libidn-dev on Ubuntu.
What is libidn-dev
libidn-dev is:
GNU Libidn is a fully documented implementation of the Stringprep, Punycode and IDNA specifications. Libidn’s purpose is to encode and decode internationalized domain names. The Nameprep, XMPP, SASLprep, and iSCSI profiles are supported.
This package contains the header files, static library, pkg-config information, and API man pages.
There are three methods to install libidn-dev on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install libidn-dev Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install libidn-dev using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install libidn-dev
Install libidn-dev Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install libidn-dev using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install libidn-dev
Install libidn-dev Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install libidn-dev using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install libidn-dev
How To Uninstall libidn-dev on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the libidn-dev package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove libidn-dev
Uninstall libidn-dev And Its Dependencies
To uninstall libidn-dev and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove libidn-dev
Remove libidn-dev Configurations and Data
To remove libidn-dev configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge libidn-dev
Remove libidn-dev configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove libidn-dev configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge libidn-dev
