Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install libgyoto8
on Ubuntu.
What is libgyoto8
libgyoto8 is:
Gyoto aims at providing a framework for computing orbits and ray-traced images in General relativity. It consists in a shared library (this package), utility programs (in the gyoto package), and a plug-in for the Python 3 and Yorick programming languages (in python3-gyoto and yorick-gyoto respectively). Gyoto can be extended with plug-ins (see libgyoto8-dev).
The standard plugin (stdplug) is included in this package. A plug-in for extending Gyoto in the Python 3 language is shipped in the python3-gyoto packages.
MPI parallelization requires the gyoto-bin and mpi-default-bin packages.
There are three methods to install libgyoto8
on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install libgyoto8 Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install libgyoto8
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install libgyoto8

Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install libgyoto8
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install libgyoto8
Install libgyoto8 Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install libgyoto8
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install libgyoto8
How To Uninstall libgyoto8 on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the libgyoto8
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove libgyoto8
Uninstall libgyoto8 And Its Dependencies
To uninstall libgyoto8
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove libgyoto8
Remove libgyoto8 Configurations and Data
To remove libgyoto8
configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge libgyoto8
Remove libgyoto8 configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove libgyoto8
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge libgyoto8
