Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install libfreenect-bin on Ubuntu.
What is libfreenect-bin
libfreenect-bin is:
libfreenect is a cross-platform library that provides the necessary interfaces to activate, initialize, and communicate data with the Kinect hardware. Currently, the library supports access to RGB and depth video streams, motors, accelerometer and LED and provide binding in different languages (C++, Python…)
This library is the low level component of the OpenKinect project which is an open community of people interested in making use of the Xbox Kinect hardware with PCs and other devices.
This package includes utilities and sample programs for kinect.
There are three methods to install libfreenect-bin on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install libfreenect-bin Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install libfreenect-bin using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install libfreenect-bin
Install libfreenect-bin Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install libfreenect-bin using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install libfreenect-bin
Install libfreenect-bin Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install libfreenect-bin using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install libfreenect-bin
How To Uninstall libfreenect-bin on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the libfreenect-bin package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove libfreenect-bin
Uninstall libfreenect-bin And Its Dependencies
To uninstall libfreenect-bin and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove libfreenect-bin
Remove libfreenect-bin Configurations and Data
To remove libfreenect-bin configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge libfreenect-bin
