In this tutorial we learn how to install libdv-bin on Ubuntu.

What is libdv-bin

libdv-bin is:

The Quasar DV Codec (libdv) is a software decoder for DV format video, as defined by the IEC 61834 and SMPTE 314M standards. DV is the encoding format used by consumer-grade digital camcorders.

This package contains sample programs for viewing (playdv), encoding (encodedv), transferring DV data (dvconnect) and insert audio into a DV stream (dubdv).

There are three methods to install libdv-bin on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install libdv-bin Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install libdv-bin using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install libdv-bin

Install libdv-bin Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install libdv-bin using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install libdv-bin

Install libdv-bin Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install libdv-bin using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install libdv-bin

How To Uninstall libdv-bin on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the libdv-bin package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove libdv-bin

Uninstall libdv-bin And Its Dependencies

To uninstall libdv-bin and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove libdv-bin

Remove libdv-bin Configurations and Data

To remove libdv-bin configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge libdv-bin

Remove libdv-bin configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove libdv-bin configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge libdv-bin
