Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install libcob4 on Ubuntu.

What is libcob4

libcob4 is:

This package contains the runtime library for gnucobol.

GnuCOBOL (formerly OpenCOBOL) is a free, modern COBOL compiler. GnuCOBOL implements a substantial part of the COBOL 85, COBOL 2002 and COBOL 2014 standards and X/Open COBOL, as well as many extensions included in other COBOL compilers (IBM COBOL, MicroFocus COBOL, ACUCOBOL-GT and others).

There are three methods to install libcob4 on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install libcob4 Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install libcob4 using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install libcob4

Install libcob4 Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install libcob4 using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install libcob4

Install libcob4 Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install libcob4 using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install libcob4

How To Uninstall libcob4 on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the libcob4 package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove libcob4

Uninstall libcob4 And Its Dependencies

To uninstall libcob4 and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove libcob4

Remove libcob4 Configurations and Data

To remove libcob4 configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge libcob4

Remove libcob4 configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove libcob4 configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge libcob4
