How To Install libcif-dev on Ubuntu

In this tutorial we learn how to install libcif-dev on Ubuntu.

What is libcif-dev

libcif-dev is:

The CIF API provides a standard C interface for reading, writing, and manipulating Crystallographic Information Files (CIFs). It is targeted in particular at CIF 2.0, but it provides support for CIF 1.1 and earlier as well.

This package contains the development files.

There are three methods to install libcif-dev on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install libcif-dev Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install libcif-dev using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install libcif-dev

Install libcif-dev Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install libcif-dev using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install libcif-dev

Install libcif-dev Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install libcif-dev using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install libcif-dev

How To Uninstall libcif-dev on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the libcif-dev package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove libcif-dev

Uninstall libcif-dev And Its Dependencies

To uninstall libcif-dev and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove libcif-dev

Remove libcif-dev Configurations and Data

To remove libcif-dev configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge libcif-dev

Remove libcif-dev configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove libcif-dev configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge libcif-dev
