Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install libao-common on Ubuntu.

What is libao-common

libao-common is:

Libao is a cross-platform audio library that allows programs to output audio using a simple API on a wide variety of platforms. It currently supports:

• Null output (handy for testing without a sound device)
• WAV files
• AU files
• OSS (Open Sound System, used on Linux and FreeBSD)
• ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture)
• PulseAudio (next generation GNOME sound server)
• and several others.

This package contains config files and man pages for libao.

There are three methods to install libao-common on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install libao-common Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install libao-common using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install libao-common

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install libao-common using apt by running the following command:

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

After updating apt database, We can install libao-common using aptitude by running the following command:

How To Uninstall libao-common on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the libao-common package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove libao-common

sudo apt-get -y autoremove libao-common

To remove libao-common configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
