Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install keepassxc on Ubuntu.

What is `keepassxc`

keepassxc is:

KeePassXC is a free/open-source password manager or safe which helps you to manage your passwords in a secure way. You can put all your passwords in one database, which is locked with one master key or a key-disk. So you only have to remember one single master password or insert the key-disk to unlock the whole database. The databases are encrypted using the algorithms AES or Twofish.

In contrast to KeePassX (package keepassx), KeePassXC is actively developed and has more features, e.g., connectivity to a Web Browser plugin (package webext-keepassxc-browser).

There are three methods to install keepassxc on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install keepassxc Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install keepassxc using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install keepassxc

Install keepassxc Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install keepassxc using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install keepassxc

Install keepassxc Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install keepassxc using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install keepassxc

How To Uninstall keepassxc on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the keepassxc package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove keepassxc

Uninstall keepassxc And Its Dependencies

To uninstall keepassxc and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove keepassxc

Remove keepassxc Configurations and Data

To remove keepassxc configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge keepassxc

Remove keepassxc configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove keepassxc configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge keepassxc
