In this tutorial we learn how to install js2-mode on Ubuntu.
What is js2-mode
js2-mode is:
This JavaScript editing mode supports:
- the full JavaScript language through version 1.7
- support for most Rhino and SpiderMonkey extensions from 1.5 to 1.7
- accurate syntax highlighting using a recursive-descent parser
- syntax-error and strict-mode warning reporting
- “bouncing” line indentation to choose among alternate indentation points
- smart line-wrapping within comments and strings
- code folding:
- show some or all function bodies as {…}
- show some or all block comments as /…/
- context-sensitive menu bar and popup menus
- code browsing using the imenu’ package
- typing helpers (e.g. inserting matching braces/parens)
- many customization options
This transitional package can be safely removed.
There are three methods to install js2-mode on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install js2-mode Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install js2-mode using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install js2-mode

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install js2-mode using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install js2-mode
How To Uninstall js2-mode on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the js2-mode package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove js2-mode
Uninstall js2-mode And Its Dependencies
To uninstall js2-mode and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove js2-mode
Remove js2-mode Configurations and Data
To remove js2-mode configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge js2-mode
