In this tutorial we learn how to install jq on Ubuntu.
What is jq
jq is:
jq is like sed for JSON data – you can use it to slice and filter and map and transform structured data with the same ease that sed, awk, grep and friends let you play with text.
It is written in portable C, and it has minimal runtime dependencies.
jq can mangle the data format that you have into the one that you want with very little effort, and the program to do so is often shorter and simpler than you’d expect.
There are three methods to install jq on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install jq Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install jq using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install jq
Install jq Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install jq using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install jq
Install jq Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install jq using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install jq
How To Uninstall jq on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the jq package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove jq
Uninstall jq And Its Dependencies
To uninstall jq and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove jq
Remove jq Configurations and Data
To remove jq configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge jq
