Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install iotop on Ubuntu.
What is iotop
iotop is:
iotop does for I/O usage what top(1) does for CPU usage. It watches I/O usage information output by the Linux kernel and displays a table of current I/O usage by processes on the system. It is handy for answering the question “Why is the disk churning so much?”.
iotop can only run under a Linux 2.6.20 or later kernel built with the CONFIG_TASKSTATS, CONFIG_TASK_DELAY_ACCT, CONFIG_TASK_IO_ACCOUNTING and CONFIG_VM_EVENT_COUNTERS build config options on.
There are three methods to install iotop on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install iotop Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install iotop using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install iotop
Install iotop Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install iotop using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install iotop
Install iotop Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install iotop using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install iotop
How To Uninstall iotop on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the iotop package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove iotop
Uninstall iotop And Its Dependencies
To uninstall iotop and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove iotop
Remove iotop Configurations and Data
To remove iotop configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge iotop
Remove iotop configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove iotop configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge iotop
