In this tutorial we learn how to install ibverbs-providers on Ubuntu.
What is ibverbs-providers
ibverbs-providers is:
libibverbs is a library that allows userspace processes to use RDMA “verbs” as described in the InfiniBand Architecture Specification and the RDMA Protocol Verbs Specification. iWARP ethernet NICs support RDMA over hardware-offloaded TCP/IP, while InfiniBand is a high-throughput, low-latency networking technology. InfiniBand host channel adapters (HCAs) and iWARP NICs commonly support direct hardware access from userspace (kernel bypass), and libibverbs supports this when available.
An RDMA driver consists of a kernel portion and a user space portion. This package contains the user space verbs drivers:
- bnxt_re: Broadcom NetXtreme-E RoCE HCAs
- cxgb4: Chelsio T4 iWARP HCAs
- efa: Amazon Elastic Fabric Adapter
- hfi1verbs: Intel Omni-Path HFI
- hns: HiSilicon Hip06 SoC
- ipathverbs: QLogic InfiniPath HCAs
- irdma: Intel Ethernet Connection RDMA
- mlx4: Mellanox ConnectX-3 InfiniBand HCAs
- mlx5: Mellanox Connect-IB/X-4+ InfiniBand HCAs
- mthca: Mellanox InfiniBand HCAs
- ocrdma: Emulex OneConnect RDMA/RoCE device
- qedr: QLogic QL4xxx RoCE HCAs
- rxe: A software implementation of the RoCE protocol
- siw: A software implementation of the iWarp protocol
- vmw_pvrdma: VMware paravirtual RDMA device
There are three methods to install ibverbs-providers on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install ibverbs-providers Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install ibverbs-providers using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install ibverbs-providers
Install ibverbs-providers Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install ibverbs-providers using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install ibverbs-providers
Install ibverbs-providers Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install ibverbs-providers using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install ibverbs-providers
How To Uninstall ibverbs-providers on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the ibverbs-providers package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove ibverbs-providers
Uninstall ibverbs-providers And Its Dependencies
To uninstall ibverbs-providers and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove ibverbs-providers
Remove ibverbs-providers Configurations and Data
To remove ibverbs-providers configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge ibverbs-providers
Remove ibverbs-providers configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove ibverbs-providers configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge ibverbs-providers
