Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install hwinfo on Ubuntu.
What is hwinfo
hwinfo is:
hwinfo is the hardware detection tool used in SuSE Linux.
In Debian Edu (Skolelinux) hwinfo has shown better results than discover when detecting mouse, keyboard and monitor.
hwinfo collects information about the hardware installed on a system. Among others, libhd contains information about cdrom, zip, floppy, disks and partitions, network card, graphics card, monitor, camera, mouse, sound, pppoe, isdn, modem, printer, scanner, bios, cpu, usb, memory and smp.
This package does not include the binaries hwscan, hwscand and hwscanqueue. If you think one or more of these should be included in the package, please contact the maintainer at hwinfo@packages.debian.org.
There are three methods to install hwinfo on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install hwinfo Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install hwinfo using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install hwinfo

Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install hwinfo using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install hwinfo
Install hwinfo Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install hwinfo using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install hwinfo
How To Uninstall hwinfo on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the hwinfo package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove hwinfo
Uninstall hwinfo And Its Dependencies
To uninstall hwinfo and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove hwinfo
Remove hwinfo Configurations and Data
To remove hwinfo configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge hwinfo
Remove hwinfo configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove hwinfo configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge hwinfo
