Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install hunspell on Ubuntu.

What is hunspell

hunspell is:

Hunspell is a spell checker and morphological analyzer library and program designed for languages with rich morphology and complex word compounding or character encoding. It is based on MySpell and features an Ispell-like terminal interface using Curses library, an Ispell pipe interface and an OpenOffice.org UNO module.

Main features:

This package contains the program with the Ispell-like terminal and pipe interfaces.

There are three methods to install hunspell on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install hunspell Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install hunspell using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install hunspell

Install hunspell Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install hunspell using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install hunspell

Install hunspell Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install hunspell using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install hunspell

How To Uninstall hunspell on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the hunspell package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove hunspell

Uninstall hunspell And Its Dependencies

To uninstall hunspell and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove hunspell

Remove hunspell Configurations and Data

To remove hunspell configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge hunspell

Remove hunspell configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove hunspell configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge hunspell
